The origins of cooperative banking movement in India can be traced to the close of nineteenth century. The movement sowed the seeds of what has now come to be known as financial inclusion and created community owned financial institutions helping millions of underprivileged.
The temple town of Vaikom, on the eastern side of the Vembanadu Lake, was the fountainhead of social reformation movements during this period like Vaikom Sathyagraha in 1924. A town with such a history could not have been far behind in embracing the co-operation movement also. Thus the origin of the Bank.
Bank presently has four branches at Vaikom, Vechoor, Thalayolaparambu and Brahmamangalam. Bank offers various loan and savings products suitable to the needs of the residents of the area.
The Bank is governed by a fifteen member Board of Directors.
The origins of the urban cooperative banking movement in India can be traced to the close of nineteenth century when, inspired by the success of the experiments related to the cooperative movement in Britain and the cooperative credit movement in Germany such societies were set up in India.
Cooperative societies are based on the principles of cooperation, – mutual help, democratic decision making and open membership. Cooperatives represented a new and alternative approach to organisation as against proprietary firms, partnership firms and joint stock companies which represent the dominant form of commercial organisation.
Vaikom situated on the eastern side of the Vembanadu Lake is very famous as a temple town and is otherwise known as ‘Dakshina Kasi’. This land witnessed several social reform movements like Vaikom Sathyagaha and in connection with the movement Mahatma Gandhi visited this small town twice. Just after the temple Entry proclamation during 1924, the cooperative movement and co-operative banking also started with the commencement of our bank. Several eminent personalities like late Vaikom Velappan have adorned the leadership of this bank.
We, The Vaikom Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd No.1193 was registered as a co-operative society on 24th February 1926 It came under the purview of Kerala Co operative societies Act and Rules of 1969 as a primary non agricultural credit society and it developed into URBAN BANK in 04th February 1980.
